Following the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding between the Komati Basin Water Authority (KOBWA) and the University of Mpumalanga, KOBWA had the distinct pleasure of hosting a delegation from the university for a comprehensive two-day learning exercise. The program was carefully designed to provide the visiting team with practical insights into water resource management and dam operations within the Komati Basin.

Over the course of the visit, the delegation toured Driekoppies Dam and Maguga Dam, where they were taken through the technical and operational processes that ensure water security, sustainability, and efficiency. These sessions highlighted the importance of integrated water resource management and the critical role the dams play in supporting both communities and ecosystems.

The team also explored the Maguga Dam aquaculture pilot project, gaining firsthand exposure to innovative initiatives that promote food security and create economic opportunities in the catchment area. The delegation shared valuable insights on ways to strengthen and improve the pilot project as KOBWA continues to gradually expand its scope. This visit demonstrated how water infrastructure can be leveraged beyond its traditional functions to drive development and resilience.

In addition, the delegation visited KOBWA’s weirs, learning about their role in regulating river flows, supporting irrigation, and maintaining ecological balance. These site visits offered a holistic perspective on the Komati Basin’s water management strategies and the interconnectedness of its infrastructure.

This learning exercise not only strengthened academic-industry collaboration but also created a valuable platform for knowledge exchange. It has laid the foundation for future partnerships between KOBWA and the University of Mpumalanga, advancing shared goals of sustainable water management and innovation.
