July is observed as Mandela Month, with Mandela Day commemorated annually on 18 July in honour of the life, legacy, and values of former South African President Nelson Mandela. The day reminds us that each of us has the power to make a meaningful difference by serving our communities and inspiring positive social change. In the spirit of Mandela Day, the Komati Basin Water Authority (KOBWA) joined the global community in celebrating this important occasion through a series of community outreach and environmental stewardship initiatives alongside its valued stakeholders and partners.

On 18 July 2026, KOBWA participated in the Jeppes Reef Community Youth Sports Day, supporting an initiative that promoted youth development, healthy lifestyles, and community unity. The event provided an opportunity to engage with local communities while reinforcing the importance of investing in young people and fostering social cohesion. As part of its ongoing commitment to environmental sustainability and responsible water resource management, KOBWA also partnered with the Inkomati-Usuthu Catchment Management Agency (IUCMA) and other stakeholders to commemorate Mandela Day under the theme "Clean Rivers, Bright Futures: A Mandela Day Initiative." Following a series of commemorative activities across the various sub-catchment areas, KOBWA participated in the Lower Komati Sub-Catchment event held on 29 July 2026 at Mahushe Agricultural High School.

The day's programme began with a river clean-up campaign at Mzinti, near the Mahushe Nature Reserve, where participants worked together to remove litter and raise awareness about the importance of protecting rivers and aquatic ecosystems. The initiative demonstrated the collective responsibility of communities and institutions in safeguarding water resources for present and future generations. KOBWA also participated in the Provincial Mandela Day Commemoration held on 30 July 2026 at Sitfokotile Secondary School in Matsulu. Activities included a clean-up campaign along the Crocodile River, symbolising a shared commitment to environmental conservation and sustainable water resource management. During the event, donations were presented to the school, while Esandleni Somusa Disabled Centre in Matsulu was also visited, where clothing was donated and further pledges of support were made.

In support of the local communities and schools, the partnering institutions collectively donated a variety of essential items, including cleaning supplies, school supplies, waste bins, water tanks with stands, sanitation and dignity packs, and other much-needed resources. These contributions reflected the partners' shared commitment to improving learning environments, promoting dignity, and enhancing the well-being of the communities they serve. As we wrap up Mandela Month and the month of July, KOBWA proudly reflects on the positive impact made through collaboration, service, and environmental stewardship. Through these initiatives, we reaffirm our commitment to community development, responsible water resource management, and partnerships that create lasting change. Together, we continue to honour Madiba's legacy by making every action count and working towards cleaner rivers, healthier communities, and a more sustainable future.
